Hello! We're heading to Rome in a few days and are meeting a friend for dinner. I wanted to bring her something from California but I can't think of anything good that she would like or that Italy doesn't make or taste better. Any suggestions? I've seen some people comment about those Trader Joe's canvas bags but I'm not sure about that. We met her on our last trip to Rome and she is an excellent tour guide. We are already planning to treat her to dinner. Thanks for your help in advance!
A lightweight backpack is actually a fantastic idea — especially for a tour guide who's on their feet all day.
If you hosted your Roman friend in California, I expect you would welcome a gift of wine or olive oil from Italy despite the fact that you can get those things made equally well in your state, and similarly, they might appreciate good quality products of that type from California, as an interesting comparison to what they would otherwise typically consume.
A tote bag from a famous shop, or famous place, in California...a bag with the name of a place that she might recognize..evene one with the name of a famous department store, or specialty shop...along the lines of your idea, but maybe someplace a bit more 'classy" in the imagination..(??)
Lots of Italian wear baseball caps with the name of MLB teams....I see as many Yankee caps here as I do in New York!
I would not bother with any food items..
We have friends in Italy and we when we visit them, we bring small gifts that have something to do with the area where we live. There is a little gift shop here which has several things with art work or graphics associated with our town and I shop there for gifts. Last fall we brought kitchen towels with scenes from our community on them and a t-shirt. This fall I will likely bring coffee or tea cups and some other small items, but it will be something unique to our area
In circumstances like this I always like to give something consumable.
I think very few people would be unhappy to receive decent quality confectionary.
You could bring something from home or buy something there, perhaps from somewhere you have visited as part of your trip? As an example, if someone visited me in London it would be lovely to have a small gift from Fortnum and Masons. Just because nice stores are there it doesn’t mean that locals visit them.
Everyone is different but what I wouldn’t want is something I have got to find a home for. I would also be a bit confused if someone gave me something branded from their hometown especially if I have never visited it and so have no connection to it.
If you are paying for dinner, for many people that is actually probably enough. It you also bring a gift and she doesn’t it could be awkward?
Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions. I was in Lake Tahoe today for work and I ended up getting her a cute tote bag from Emerald Bay State Park, Lake Tahoe. I do recall her using a big tote bag on her tours to put her folders and photos inside. I hope she likes it. Appreciate all your feedback!
Emerald Bay State Park, Lake Tahoe.
I love Emerald Bay! We are headed to Tahoe in a few weeks. I think you made a great choice. I've got a dish towel from there as a gift for someone once. I might look for a tote this time.
Thanks Joy! If you're headed to Tahoe in a few weeks, head to the updated visitor center at D.L. Bliss State Park. That is where I got the Emerald Bay tote bag. DL Bliss just reopened last week after being closed for 3 years for water infrastructure upgrades. It's a small visitor center but lots of cute souvenirs. Enjoy!
That's a great idea - Tote bags are always useful, I'd love a special gift like that.
