My brother is turning 50 and will be in Florence this July. I want to send a local gift basket or the like to his hotel for the occasion. Any ideas as to the best way to go about this? Suggest a wine store with gifts or ?

The typical Italian word for 'gift basket' is "cesto regalo". Doing a Google Search I found this company in Florence: http://www.gastronomiagalanti.com/itGA-welcome.html (Note that the lower part of the page has English.) I believe this would be another option:
http://www.tuscanfarm.com/en/home I am sure there are many others keep in mind that a lot of Italian businesses are either not online, and then there are many more that have web sites that were not subsequently updated or are relatively non-functional. If the hotel is a bit more upscale I would imagine they could help you. Good luck.
