I'm thinking of renting a place to stay in Gianicolo. How far is this from the main attractions in Rome. How long would it take for me to get to the Trastevere area or Monti? Or the Spanish steps. And is it easy to get from point A to point B without a car or expensive taxi fare?

You can take buses or trams from the Gianicolo across the river and then add the metro to the list of local transportation options. I prefer buses because I like to be above ground. I probably wouldn't walk from the Gianicolo and then to the Vatican Museums, for example, or to the Colosseum, but a short ride on public transportation will get you to the historic center (or at least across the Tevere) conveniently.
