I will be in Florence in a few weeks (yay!), and I'm wondering about the status of the restoration of the original panels of the Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise doors. In February, Rick had an article about it and this bit caught my eye "At Florence's Duomo Museum, the restoration of the original panels of Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise is wrapping up. The famous panels are being reinserted in their door frames and should be back on display for a formal inauguration on June 24, 2012, the feast day of Florence's patron saint, John the Baptist." Any idea if they are on schedule for this?
I don't know about the inauguration, but if you are in Florence on June 24 there's a lot going on, including the annual medieval soccer match. A tour guide told me about this - something really special to see - and not much like today's soccer. And of course all the celebrations of the saint's day. Lucky you.
