Getting up Vesuvius

I’m staying at a B&B near Ercolano and Portici, and I need to know the best way (in January) to get up Vesuvius. I have a rental car, but it looks online like access isn’t so easy with a private car. Can someone comment on that? If we opt to take a shuttle bus, where do we go? And where do I park the rental car? Thanks for your help.

We visited Vesuvius in March 2015. Right outside the Ercolano Scavi train station, we purchased shuttle tickets for 20 euros per person round trip. The shuttles were several minivans that carried eight passengers each.

Our driver took us all the way to the trailhead. He looked at his watch and told us what time he would be leaving to return to Ercolano. If I recall correctly, he gave us more than an hour which was plenty of time to get to the top, walk along the rim and take plenty of pictures.

Although it was a sunny and mild day, it was cold and windy along the trail. Make sure you dress appropriately.

Have fun.
