Help! My son and I will be in Florence for 8 days next week and would like to visit the town of Vicenza where Palladio lived, to view the Palladian architecture. Is there a direct way to get there by bus or train from Florence? I believe it is about a 3 hr trip and don't know if it will be possible for a one day outing. Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.
You can take a train from downtown florence to down town Vicenza. You will have to change trains at least once. The Villa's that Rick Steves talks about in the Italy book are within walking distance from down town. Try and walk up the Mt. Berico Church on the hill above the train station. The view is beautiful.
Feel free to send me a message with any questions. I live in Vicenza
Michelle - I second your recommendations. We stayed three nights in Vicenza last summer in a hotel that used to be a convent just below Monte Berico. I don't remember the name at the momennt but it was quite inexpensive and huge airy rooms. The views from up there are terrific and there's a great terrace cafe. Vicenza is very compact and walkable with a surprising diversity of atmosphere.
