From what I can tell the best way to get to Vernazza by train is to take the train to La Spezia then a regional train to Vernazza - is that right? and just purchase the tickets at the train station or can you buy them ahead of time online. Thanks!
stacey, For the trip from Rome to La Spezia, there are direct trains (no changes) from Termini, with a travel time of ~3H:55M. However you'll need to transfer to the Regional train from La Spezia to Vernazza (that trip is 19-minutes). I'd probably arrange the ticket from La Spezia to Vernazza before leaving Rome, although it wouldn't be difficult to also buy in La Spezia as mentioned in a previous reply. Don't forget to validate! When the train arrives in Vernazza, be ready to disembark promptly, as they don't usually stop for too long.
I think it really depends on where you're coming from but, yes, the regional train is the best way to get there. Just buy the tickets right before travel. There is no need to buy regional tickets in advance. There are no discounts on these already very low prices. Donna
we will be coming from Rome via train...can you buy them at other stations or just wait till you get at that station in La Spezia
You can avoid the lines at the La Spezia station by buying your ticket at kiosk. I'ts only 1.8 euros, good in one direction for 75 minutes.
Don't forget to stamp your ticket.
I did just that on Tuesday & remembered Rick's advice to go to the front of the train and ask the conductor to mark your ticket, with an apology. It worked! Saved us 2 48-Euro fines when the conductor came through checking tickets a few minutes later.
