Our flight leaves at 7 a.m. on a Sat. morning and I am wondering how to get to the bus that early from our accomodations which are northeast of San Marco. Do the vaperreto run that early? Which should we take? How difficult is it to walk in the dark that early with luggage? Thanks for any help you can give.
For such an early flight maybe it would make sense to stay near the airport your last night. I know I'd rather not be stressing about catching a bus at the crack of dawn and making my flight. Just a thought....
Susan - Your hotel can arrange a water taxi at an early hour to get you out to the airport in a timely manner. Not a problem at all!! And a rather glamorous way to end your trip. Ciao, Greg
You should look at the various lines (blue, red, orange, gold) offered by Alilaguna, a private ferry company that goes to the airport and back for around 13 euros and which can get you to the airport as early as 5am. (http://www.alilaguna.it/index.en.html) Depending on where you are located, I think you'll likely find something that works - also keep in mind that the public ferries (vaporetti) that go up and down the canal start their regular schedule at 5am so if you need to get to San Marco to get this other ferry to the airport you could do that as well. It is hard to give you definite recommendations on lines not knowing where you are staying at. I've walked around Venice in the early morning and there are always merchants around even that early so I've never felt there was danger as long as there were normal residents around doing their own business.
Water taxi, we did it and it was the best 100 euro we spent the entire trip. We had 4 bags 9big and heavy) for 2 people...yes we over packed!
We had a 7:45 AM flight out of the Venice airport, so we opted to stay the night before on the mainland at the Hotel Marco Polo. We could have taken a bus from the hotel to the airport but we opted to take a taxi. We were only about 7 min. from the airport. The hotel was clean and comfortable, nothing great, but it served it's purpose. It took us about 20 min. to get there by bus from the bus station on Venice, so we stayed fairly late on the island before leaving. Have fun.
Your best bet is the Alilaguna Linea BLU (Blue Line) for that time of the morning. There are a few stops along the way, but you won't have to get off and onto another form of transportation. It will take you directly to the airport.

One thing to note about the Alilaguna to/from the airport - it might be a real challenge if anyone in your party suffers from motion sickness. You sit quite down in the water and the boat rocks a lot. Others may have different experiences on different boats or different days, but we found the boat across the lagoon from the airport to be much more challenging than the vaporetti along the Grand Canal.
Indulge yourself at the end of your vacation instead of worrying about buses, losing a night in Venice by night at airport, etc.
Take a water taxi.
Heartily concur with the water taxi. We left our B&B at 4:30 AM and it was very memorable watching Venice "wake up" as we sped toward the airport. There are too many other things to stress out about during your trip - spend the extra money and have one less thing to worry about.
