I will staying at Smeraldo Hotel and will need to catch a 12:30 PM flight back to the States out of Fiumicino on a Friday in July. What is the best/ cheapest way to get to the airport and make sure I am on time for my flight?

Generally the best and cheapest do not work well together. Have lots of options and they are work. Cheaper the price, the more inconvenience. Taxi is best and fixed at 48E., Shared shuttles buses work well, arranged by the hotel, and in the range of 20E or so. Leonordo Express at 14E from the train station, FR2 train at about 8E and same for SITU bus. Pick one that works for you. Will a 12.30 departure be at the airport no later than 10am. Nine would be better because of the recent fire.

Easy. Jump on the #8 tram on via Arenula, on block from your hotel. Take it to Trastevere Train Station and then hop on the FR 2 regional train to the airport. Really quick and cheap.

If you do decide to take the train from Trastevere to FCO (which I've done several times), remember that you can always buy a ticket at the newsstand inside the station. The ticket window is often closed and the ticket machine often has a line and someone trying to help you buy a ticket in hopes of a tip afterward. Just go to the newsstand and buy the ticket with no hassle. DO REMEMBER TO VALIDATE THIS TICKET BEFORE YOU GET ON BOARD!
