getting to sorrento

We are staying in Sienna and then Sorrento. Is it possible to make this trip in a day on public transportation? We have also considered taking the train to either Rome or Naples for one night and then making our way to Sorrento on the bus or the train the next day. (We are staying in Rome at the beginning of our trip so we would only be making this stop for the convenience of getting to Sorrento.) What do you recommend? Make a stop between Sienna and Sorrento? Take the bus or train to Sorrento? Thank you for your response!

It would be about 5 hours by train to Naples. Then you would have to transfer to the Circumvesuvius Train which would take about 1 1/2 hours more to get to Sorrento.

If it was my trip, suggest you just go straight thru to Sorrento. I think you would waste too much time going from Siena to Rome and then spending the night there and on to Sorento next day. Once you get to Rome you can get fast train to Naples which takes a little over an hour and in Naples the train to Sorrento is in the same train station, I seem to remember it is downstairs but not sure, it is a local train and takes an hour.

Jayne,

Yes, it's certainly possible to get from Siena to Sorrento in one day, and it's actually a fairly straightforward trip.

Based on the current schedules, one of the easiest and quickest trips would be a departure from Siena at 08:18, arriving Napoli Centrale at 12:50 (time 4H:32M, one change at Firenze SMN, reservations compulsory on 2nd leg....DON'T forget to validate ticket for the Regionale on the 1st leg).

Upon arrival at Napoli Centrale, you'll walk downstairs to the Stazione Garibaldi and buy a ticket for the Circumvesuviana. There are departures about every 20 minutes, so you won't have long to wait. Tickets are cheap, and the trip will be ~1H:06M.

Note that they have several lines, so be sure to board the correct train to Sorrento (it's the end of the line on the same route as Pompeii). One caveat to mention - be sure to wear a Money Belt and watch your luggage carefully, as the train has a bit of a "reputation".

Happy travels!

The correct Pompei station is "Pompei Scavi". Take the other Pompei stop and you'll end up in the town and not the ruins.
