getting to sicily

Help! Does anyone have any recommendations for getting to Sicily? We don't want to take a slow ferry, and the airfare seems awfully expensive. Someone posted that you could fly for about 60 euros, but we are finding the cheapest roundtrip airfare is $266.00 per person from Rome. (Naples is out of this world!) Seems kind of steep. Does this seem right to those of you who have already gone? We are going the 1st and 2nd week of Sept. '09.
Thanks

diane, you might check on bus options or rail travel. certainly trains go, via the 30 minute ferry, across the narrow strait between mainland and island.
bus would take that same short ferry system. check ricks links in transport options. good luck, larry from springfield.

I'm looking at the Easy Jet website right now and a one way flight from Fiumicino to Palermo on September 1st is 10 euros + checked baggage fee (which may or may not be necessary for you)

Last Nov., we drove up from Palermo to Campania. We stopped off in Tropea (beautiful!) and had plans to stop in Maratea as well, but it was pouring rain, so we skipped it and drove on. It was a great drive (and, for our family of three, turned out to be the least expensive actually).
