We plan to stay a week on Sardinia in July. What is the least costly way to get there from either Naples or Rome by ferry or air? Where can I search to find ferry prices and schedules?
I believe Ryanair flies from Rome-Ciampino to both Alghero and Cagliari. You could investigate their prices and the distance of the airports from where you are leaving and where you want to go to see if this is a good option for you.
Part of that depends on where you'll be staying in Sardinia and your preferred mode of transportation before or after you get there. We often took the ferry from Civitavecchia to Sardinia, as we were on our motorini. One time we watched the opening ceremonies to the 2008 Olympics, riding the ferry to Sardinia with ALL Italians. It was an interesting cultural experience. They hissed and booed when the French team walked in and went totally nuts when the Italian team marched. Thankfully, they cheered the Americans. We made many new friends on that trip and I'm surprised many of them could drive off the boat- way too much limoncello. The ferry rides are quite comfortable and they take a few hours. Do make sure you know which port you're headed to if you go this route. We always took the ferry and drove, as riding in the hills/mountains of Sardinia on our motorino was an incredible experience!
What a fun experience with the Olympics memory! Thanks for your helpful info. We plan to stay near Arzachena at a resort. Which ferry line is the best value? Which port shall we ferry to?
I would head in to Olbia, which is a very popular destination from Civitavecchia. There are multiple ferry options. If you Google you'll see Moby, Snav, Tirrenia, and Corsica/Sardinia Ferries. There are multiple websites you can book through. We've probably been on the "Corsica Sardinia Ferries" line most.
THANK YOU for that information!
I will get those ferry tickets soon! If you have any great tips for what to do on Sardinia, they would be appreciated greatly! We plan to fly into Venice. After 4 days there, go to Verona and Pisa (maybe), then Florence, Arrezo, and Assisi. Hope to catch a train or bus to Rome for ferry to Sardinia. After a week at the Hotel Residence Porto Piccolo, fly to Naples for 2 nights, then back up to Rome for 4 nights before leaving Italy. I am so excited for this adventure to begin! My husband is being a good sport about trip ideas. Thanks, again, for your help!
