My fiance and I are currently planning our honeymoon in Italy. We will be there for a total of fourteen days. We were originally thinking we'd spend three nights in Florence. After searching more on the internet, we are now considering dropping our nights in Florence and staying in a small town of Querceto. It looks incredibly charming and romantic with plenty of options for us. We'd most likely stay at the Castello Ginori Di Querceto. We'd probably do a day at the Calidario Terme Estrusche; hang out in the hot springs and get a massage. We want to do wine and oil tastings, maybe try a cooking class and bicycle around the countryside. Ideally, just relax for part of our trip. The only problem with visiting Querceto is that we would have to rent a car (as far as I can tell). Based on our current itinerary, we would be coming to Querceto from Orvieto and leaving Querceto to go to Cinque Terre. Are there any small towns near Querceto that we could rent a vehicle from after traveling by train most of the way going either direction? Or, is there another town that offers similar things to do with similar sceneries that is more accessible by public transportation? Your help is most appreciated! Grazie!
Julie, Orvieto is the perfect place to pick up your rental car. Staying out in the country is an awesome idea. We stayed in a neat Agritourisimo, not too far away, just outside of San Donato, and used this base to explore the area by car. I have not been to Querceto, but if it looks neat; go for it! You will have more fun in a little town than you would in a big rambling city like Firenze. And it is so much fun checking out the adjacent small towns, and the car is the only way to go. Also check out Panzano. We ate lunch and dinner at Dario Checcini's. Don't miss a dinner there...so much fun! http://www.panzano.com/cecchini.htm And wine tasting at Stefano's Accademia was fantastic. Where else would the proprietor give you a free bottle of wine to go, even when you did not buy any of his wares? He was so neat, and taught us so much about Italian wines(and Stefano can arrange a wine tour that can't be beat.)
