Getting to pompeii

We are going to Rome for 3 days and then to Sorrento for 3 days - wanted to go to Pompeii either from Rome on the way to Sorrento or on the way back from Sorrento - does anyone have a feel for which is easier - we would be traveling from Pompeii to Florence most likely - or maybe to Rome for the night and then to Florence

You'll have more travel time on the Sorrento-Florence day than on the Rome-Sorrento day, so I'd tend to favor squeezing Pompeii into the day you head from Rome to Sorrento. There's also a great deal more to do right in the city of Florence than right in the town of Sorrento, so I'd rather cut into my Sorrento time than the Florence time. Of course, I don't know what side trips you might be planning from Sorrento.

You go right by Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi) on the Circumvesuvia train to Sorrento from Naples Central station. You certainly could leave Rome early, and be at Pompeii when they open, there is bag storage in the area, and you will see what most want to see by Noon or 1:00, then on to Sorrento in about 40 minutes.

I think to visit Pompeii on the way to Florence would mean a late afternoon arrival, and a long day.

Given that it is only a short train ride to Pompeii from Sorrento, you could also just visit from there one of the days in Sorrento. We did a nice day, hitting Pompeii first thing, into Naples for Pizza, then one time, visited the Archeological Museum in the afternoon, the other trip we visited Herculaneum in the afternoon.
