Getting to Milan malpensa airport by train/bus?

I have to take a 6 AM train from Arezzo to Milan. It leaves me in Milan Central Station. I have to get from there to the airport. I dont have a lot of time. I get into Milan at 8:30 and I have to be at the airport at 9:30. Can someone tell me what the best way is to do this?
Thanks!

The Malpensa Express train departs Milano Centrale station at :25 and :55 after each hour and takes 51 minutes. You must buy the ticket there and stamp it in the activation box before entering the track area.

Train may not work for you, it takes most of an hour to get from Milan to the Airport, the train runs about once an hour, but looks to leave at about 8:55, getting you there at 9:45 or so. One leaves at 8:25, but you may not make that one.

The bus is somewhat better, leaving about every twenty minutes and taking 50 minutes, with one leaving at 8:35 and getting to the airport at 9:25.

All of this sounds pretty tight, you might be prepared to take a Cab, that will set you back about 90 euro.

You can go on the Malpensa Airport website and find out details for all of this.

And that's assuming the train isn't delayed or late.

With a tight connection sleep in MIlan the night before. The latest train departs Arezzo at 20:26 and arrives in Milan at 23:40

Miriam,

What date is this trip taking place? Using an arbitrary date next week, the schedules show a direct departure from Arezzo at 06:11, arriving Milana Centrale at 08:40. If you use that one, you'd be connecting with the 08:55 departure of the Malpensa Express, arriving MXP about 09:46. If there any delays at any point in the route, that will add to the time of arrival at the airport. Even if you save time with a pre-purchased ticket for the Malpensa Express, you still won't arrive at the desired time.

If you're working with a very tight schedule, I wouldn't recommend the Malpensa Shuttle (Bus). I've found that while the travel time is usually close to what they advertise, the Bus is affected by traffic so the trip could take longer.

If you must be at the airport at 09:30, the safer approach would be to head for Milan the day prior to travel and spend the night in one of the hotels close to Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna stations (the trip to the airport is a bit shorter from Cadorna).

I have always used the bus and have been satisfied with it.
The only thing I have to remember is that the bus could be slowed by "rush hour" traffic - whereas the train just zips along the tracks.
Some day I will try the train and then I'll have a comparison -but for now I'm satisfied with the bus.

Thanks for all the replies. Truthfully, 9:30 was a bit overly precautious. If i get to the airport by 10, I'll be ok. Is that more doable? Are the trains often delayed?
Thx for all the help!

We took the Malpensa Express from Milano Centrale and it took almost an hour because the train was delayed. A gentleman attempted to board the train apparently without a ticket. He was confronted by the conductor and a 15 minute argument ensued. During the argument, a woman decided that would be a good time to step off the train and have a cigarette, resulting in a separate discussion with the conductor lasting about 10 minutes. Additionally, the train drops you a little bit far from the gates.

oh. Is that something unusual, or, is this train often delayed. Anyone have a similar experience?

aj,

The trains are usually quite punctual, but there's absolutely no way to predict whether that will be the case at the time you'll be travelling. Strikes are always a possibility, although the Italians usually announce those well in advance. When I was in Italy last year, there was some kind of disruption on the high speed lines between Rome and Florence, which delayed both Trenitalia and Italo for about an hour.

If everything goes according to plan, it should be possible to travel from Arezzo to MXP by 10:00. It would probably be a good idea to buy advance tickets both for the high speed train from Arezzo as well as the Malpensa Express. You can buy both on the www.captaintrain.com website.
