Getting to Malpensa very early in the morning.

Hi All,

We're staying at the Sheraton right next to the Porta Venezia Metro station in Milan, and our flight to London leaves from Malpensa very early in the morning (7:55). Any advice on how to best get there without breaking the bank (or missing the flight :) ). Best idea I have so far is to have the hotel order a taxi for us, and leave around 5:00 to go to the central station & catch a bus from there. Any better ideas? Any gotchas we should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

It's been my experience that there are no really good options for getting an early morning flight departure out of Malpensa. It's at least 30 miles from central Milan to Malpensa--the distance blindsides some. I've never taken a taxi the 30 miles, so I don't know how huge the taxi fare will be, esp. in dollars. I'm only guessing but have a question about whether any of the buses will get you there before 6am. What some of us have done, I did this last year, is sleep in one of the airport hotels, here's a list of those: malpensa airport hotels

Thanks! Unfortunately staying at an airport hotel is also less than ideal (IMO), since we're going to La Scala the night before we leave, and would have to get to the hotel pretty late. I did check the bus schedules looks like there are buses that leave very early:

http://www.malpensashuttle.it/mxp-mil.htm

Stazione Fiera T1
* 4.25 4.40 5.15
* 5.00 5.15 5.50
* 5.20 5.35 6.10
* 5.40 5.55 6.30

What worries me with my idea is that I don't know:
- How reliable the taxi service is that early in the morning if I have the hotel order one for us.
- How reliable the bus service is.

Which boils down to the question of when we should leave.

Thanks again,

Greg

Thanks for the tips! We might actually end up taking the taxi all the way, especially since I was told there's now a 70 euro flat rate.

Looks like no matter what means of transportation you decide on you have to be at the airport a minimum of two hours prior to your flight. With this in mind you are going to be on your way to the airport at 5:00am, there isn't going to be any traffic congestion at that time of the morning. I would opt for the taxi, your hotel can arrange for a taxi to be at the hotel whatever time you choose.

Just get a taxi, it's a long drive to Malpensa and you have a long day of travel ahead of you. Why tire yourselves out before even getting to the airport? You didn't mention what day you were leaving, while you are going out of the city while everyone is coming in, plan for traffic and leave nice and early.

We recently returned to the states through Malpensa, and stayed the night before at the Airport Hotel on Pirandello, right in Malpensa, only 5 minutes from the airport. It was basic but clean and comfortable, mini bar, amenities, for 103 euros/night. In the morning, a shuttle (included in the room price) took us to the airport. We dropped off our rental car the night before to avoid early morning hassle, and took a taxi back to the hotel. To read more about the Airport Hotel, go to www.initalia.it. I would stay here again because it is so convenient and close, and the front desk staff was very helpful.
