Getting to Lucca

We're planning a trip beginning in Lucca. The last time we went to Lucca, we flew to Pisa and took the train. Is that still the most time effective way?

Other option seems to be flying into Florence and taking the train. I'm especially wondering if that might be better -- in many cases I'm seeing we'll have to land somewhere else and take a connecting flight to get to Pisa.

What am I forgetting about?

Thanks very much!

Jeffrey,

Yes, that's still the most effective way. You'll have to use a Shuttle from Pisa Airport to Pisa Centrale, as the new "people mover" isn't ready yet. The trip from Pisa Centrale to Lucca is as short as 27 minutes if you can connect with a direct train (it's a Regionale so DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train). There's also a Bus from Pisa to Lucca, but the train would be easier (IMO).

You could also start in Florence but the trip from Firenze SMN to Lucca is about 1.5 hours I believe, so would be a longer trip. After a long international flight, the shorter travel time would be my preference.

I agree with that as I have flown out of Pisa, but stayed the previous night in Lucca. It is fairly quick and easy to get to. Also, the Pisa airport is larger than Florence so you may have more flight options.

Thanks-looks like we'll be flying into Pisa.

I didn't realize Pisa airport was bigger than Florence

Although the PSA airport is larger than FLR, however most flights are low cost European airlines. Florence has more flights with traditional airlines such as: AirFrance, Lufthansa, KLM, Swiss.

There is a Delta flight JFK-PSA which operates 4 days a week from Jun through Aug, but other than that you need to connect somewhere in Europe to go to either FLR or PSA.

Since you live near where I live (I even used to live in San Leandro many years ago), you will probably fly out of SFO just like me.

The best option to PSA is probably AirFrance (Delta partner) via CDG.

For Florence, where I fly yearly, I usually fly Lufthansa (United partner) via FRA or MUC, AirFrance via CDG, Swiss (part of Lufthansa) via ZRH, or KLM (Delta partner) via AMS.

Ralph there isn't much to expand about the people mover. It's still under construction and won't be ready till the end of the year. It will connect the airport to the Pisa station. Currently there is a shuttle bus from the station to the airport (and back).
