We're planning a trip for next Spring and would like to visit Gubbio. We'll be based in Assisi and will not have a car. Has anyone used public transportation to get to Gubbio, or perhaps taken an organized tour of some sort? My research so far seems to show that getting from Assisi to Gubbio is a bit involved. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, we took the bus from Assisi to Gubbio - had to change in Perugia but it wasn't a problem. Sounds like maybe you're talking about a day trip. This may or may not be worth it because of the amount of travel time involved. You can find the schedules on umbriamobilita.it (under Orari, choose Extraurbani). First go to Assisi and see the schedules to Perugia and then look at the Perugia or Gubbio schedules for the next leg.
I've done the bus trip, too, but stayed overnight in Gubbio. If you go, make sure to see the Roman arena just outside the town. If Gubbio turns out to be too far away, Spello is only a few kilometers from Assisi (also reachable by bus, or by footpath if you're up for that).
Thanks, I am considering it as a daytrip. But looking at the bus schedules with changes, it may be left for another trip. I plan to see Spello on another day. Any other ideas for daytrips from Assisi?
