Getting to/from hotel to Rome evening tour starting/ending points

Looking into several evening tours in Rome and wondering how to get from my hotel (near the Colosseum) to the start of the tour, then back to the hotel at the end of the tour. One starts at the Colosseum but ends at 10:30 p.m. at Piazza del Campidoglio, which looks to be about a mile from the hotel. Another starts at the Spanish Steps and ends at Piazza Farnese, which looks to be about 4 km from the hotel. I am a solo traveler so concerned about safety. Is taking a taxi going to be my only option? If so, how do you get a taxi at the end of a tour?

There will be lots of people out at that hour. You can walk, or take a taxi. Taxi stands are near major monuments..

We often took buses late at night much farther than 4km, (they run until about midnight, usually) or walked. When we were just too tired after dinner and wine, a taxi was often the choice as they are inexpensive. You can find a taxi stand near Largo Argentina. not far from Piazza Farnese, and in the case of the Campidoglio, I think Piazza Venezia is your best bet for a taxi stand. Ask the tour guide to point you in the right direction.

Ask the tour guide to point you in the direction of the nearest taxi stand. We always take a business card from the hotel and hand it to the driver. We have been all over Rome at that time night with no safety concerns. You might to avoid dark allies but the locals are very active till midnight or later.

Piazza del Campidoglio is not far at all from the Colosseum - certainly not even close to being a mile - so I'd walk that one. Piazza Farnese is a bit farther away but you have little to worry about walking around at night. As already mentioned, lots of people will be taking in the evening and as Frank suggested, you can ask your guide for directions to the nearest taxi stand.

The area around the Colosseo/Fori Imperiali is pedestrian only on Sunday, your taxi may have to detour around it that night.
