We have a 6:30 am flight out of the Florence airport. I see that the earliest we can catch a bus is at 4:54 am, arriving at the airport at 5:24 am, which is cutting it too close for our comfort.
Is a taxi the only reasonable alternative and does anyone have a recommendation for company? Shuttle services online quoted me $60, which seems overpriced.

We had the same issue in Florence Boarding at 6:35AM for a 7:00am Flight to Paris. Our Air BNB host called a Taxi for us that picked us up at at 4AM I think. They actually offered to pick us up and take us themselves if they could not book a taxi (best hosts ever!). The street we were staying on was no cars, so we had to meet the taxi at the end of our street, and he was there waiting for us. Can you ask your Hotel to order you a taxi?
Thanks Letizia. We are also lodging in AirBNB type of situation so we will have to figure out how to schedule a taxi for ourselves if our renters can't assist us. Looks like the way to go.

The city center is only 6km from the airport.
City imposed flat fee is Euro 25.30 between 10pm and 6am (during the day it's 22 euro).
There is also a surcharge of 1 Euro for each piece of luggage.
Whoever quoted you $60 is a scammer or a thief.
I've never spent more than 30 euro for a taxi to the airport, and my parents' house isn't even downtown but on the opposite side of Florence.

All taxi drivers are independent operators and owners of their taxi cabs (licenses cannot be awarded to companies by law). However taxi operators are partners in taxi cooperatives to share certain services (like radio dispatch, marketing, etc.).
I had a 6:50 am flight from Florence last October. Taxi was great. Came to the Oltrarno palazzo to pick us up at 4 something and cost was around 25 euro (going on a cruddy memory here) The hotel arranged for it, but I was told by several folks that I could have called for the cab. You do want to specify in advance if you are paying by credit card, or so I was told.

Agree with others posting about a flat fee to the airport. I have left out of Florence on the early flight and never paid more than 30 euros.
