Getting to Cortona from Rome DaVinci (FCO) Airport

What is the best way to get from FCO to Cortona without a car? Also, once in Cortona, can you rent Vespas and or a car? Thanks!

I took a slightly different route than GAC described. I took the Leonardo Express train to Rome termini and then a train from Rome termini to Cortona-Camucia. When I arrived at the bus stop (next to Camucia train station), the tabak where you supposedly could buy tickets was closed. I was able to buy a ticket from the bus driver. I don't remember the price, but I think it was 1 or 2 Euro, so would suggest that you have some Euro coins with you. I think the change at tiburtina may be more direct, but if I recall, the trains left at different times. For me, the departure from termini worked out better. Regardless of which route you choose, I would suggest that you print off the train schedule for the day of your arrival before you leave.

You can go either way GAC and Laura suggested. If the tabacchi is closed as mentioned (and if there is a few minutes before the next bus comes) you can get bus tickets from most of the bars on the street directly ahead of you. Ask for the 'quattro coursi' ticket, as it will save money for multiple people/trips. In terms of renting Vespas, I'm unaware of this being possible anywhere nearby. As for car rentals, I believe there is a local rental in Terontola (which is also a Cortona train stop, just a little further away than the main Camucia train stop is). Enjoy your trip!

Why transit through TIBURTINA station rather than Termini Station in Rome, when headed to Cortona? Here are the reasons: 1. Rome FCO to Tiburtina costs 8 Euros on the FR1 airport train. Trains run every 15 minutes (every 30 minutes on Sundays). By contrast, Rome FCO to Termini costs 14 Euros (nonstop) on the Leonardo da Vinci airport train. Trains run every 30 minutes to Termini, seven days per week. 2. The connection at Tiburtina is much easier than at Termini. Tiburtina is a much smaller station, and there's much less walking between trains. 3. The cost of the Regionale train from Termini is 30 cents higher than from Tiburtina, yet it takes several minutes longer because the train originates at Termini and stops at Tiburtina before heading north to Cortona. 4. The advantage of connecting at Termini is that you'll be the first to board the Regionale train to Cortona, and therefore have a better selection of seats (which are all unreserved). This by itself is usually not a significant factor. The other advantage is that the airport train to Termini takes only 31 minutes nonstop (versus 45 minutes for the other train to Tiburtina which makes several stops en-route). This too is usually not a significant factor. Indeed, the airport train to Termini is often much more crowded. 5. I recommend making the connection at Tiburtina for the reasons outlined above, unless PERHAPS you get a better timing connection at Termini (which you won't know until you reach the train station at FCO airport).

We rented the car at FCO and just drove up to Cortona. It was a nice drive after we got past the traffic near Rome. Is there some reason you don't want to do that drive? I think it took us about 3 hours and this way we had the car already when we got to Cortona.
