Getting to Bomarzo - Garden of the Monsters - Outside Rome?

Hi friends! Has anyone here actually visited Bomarzo before, and if so, is it worth the trek? My kids are 12 and 16 and I'm hoping to find some fun locales that are the less stereotypical kinds of places to take them around Rome. (Always got to think about what they might want to post on their Instagram, right?)

I also am having trouble figuring out how to get there. I never rent cars so I'd rather take a bus or train.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I was looking at that garden, too. I have not been there but www.bomarzo.net at least tells you which train stations to travel to before getting a bus. It looks like a pretty unusual place!

Parco dei Mostri It is unusual, but challenging to get to. I would not build a vacation day around it. Even with a car it will take most of a day.

More worthy, IMO, is Tivoli and the fantastic Villa d'Este. You can take a train. The villa is about a 20 minute walk from the station. Fantastic estate with gardens and fountains you have to see to believe. The Appian Way or Aqueduct Park are also less-trampled ground. Both accessible by bus, Metro or combo. Have you considered Ostia Antica?

Thank you for the lovely replies!
I think we may skip Bomarzo and instead, per your advice, make our way to Tivoli and Villa D'este--sounds unbelievable.

I will also research Ostia Antica now as well. Thanks again!
