Getting to and around Pontelandolfo Italy

Hi,

I am going to Pontelandolfo Italy in November. The travel person I am working with said that because if its location it will be hard to get to. She said I should not drive because I have to start in Naples and then the roads to the country are mountainous and twisting. She said driving in Naples would be a very bad idea since this is the very first time I've ever been to Europe and I guess the traffic there is crazy or something.

But I still want to go and not break the bank in getting there. It's where my grandfather is from and I wanted to see it.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Hello hiann08, and welcome to the forum,

While I agree with not driving in Naples there are other options to rent a car and go if you want to. Salerno is easily reachable by train and has multiple car rental agencies and is a much smaller city with about the same drive time to Pontelandolfo. Others may be able to give you points on renting a car more outside the city with easy access to get on the road.

Given the distance and the roads I would allow 2 hours one way driving so what your plans are exactly - driving there and back in one day - may need to considered. I don't know if it's possible to stay overnight there or not. It looks like you might have to head to the nearby Campolattaro for a place to stay.

I see conflicting information on whether there is a bus or not and the bus may drop you off at a nearby intersection leaving you to walk into the old town itself. I've always found Italian bus information confusing and difficult to pin down from the states, but there might a potential third way there. But if you take the bus I would definitely think about staying over as rural buses are often on a daily schedule.

Good luck on seeing your grandfather's town,

Hi Tod,

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate the help and knowledge!!

I was hoping to actually say in Pontelandolfo for a few days. I'm having problems finding where to stay. Is Campolattaro fairly close by? It's hard to tell on maps!

Campolattaro is about 8 minutes away by car - it's essentially the nearest hilltop across the small valley.

I do see B&B Al Castello as a place to stay in town. But all the reviews are old and I don't see a contact except maybe a number.

There's Agriturismo La Pacchiana which is a couple of minutes away. They are obviously local and depending on their English may be able to help you with local information versus B&B Al Castello which looks like it may be costless check in kind of place. But their data seems old too so I'm not sure these places survived COVID or not. Websites in Italy - particularly in the south is like the web was in the 1990s.

La Locanda Della Presuntuosa is nearby-ish - 4 minutes - and actually seems to have a web presence.

La Cartolina del Sannio is on the nearby lake.

But there are several places in Campolattaro to choose from as well as restaurants and shops so there is something to be said for staying in town versus a singular spot in the country.

Have a great trip,

Wow Tod and Marco!

Thank you both SO much.

I really appreciate the help.

I had noticed the B&Bs but, as you said, they seemed like the websites were not current or active.

More digging is going to be needed on my part, but you both have really helped so much.

Thank you!!!

BTW I think your suggestion of Campolattaro sounds like a good one.

As you said, a bit more choices and not so isolated for a first timer like myself!

Not to overwhelm you with even more suggestions but you might look at Caserta for renting a car. I haven't been to Caserta yet but there are 3 trains an hour from Naples, it has plenty of car rental places near the train station and it is in the direction of Pontelandolfo so it's heading where you want to go anyway.

The train there is about 50 minutes and cuts out at least 30 minutes of driving from Naples and, most importantly, cuts out driving in Naples. Pontelandolfo should be about 1.5 hours driving from Caserta. Getting out of Caserta will nothing like getting out of Naples.

Also the usual driving warnings:
- Every driver needs an IDP before you go.
- Read up on ZTLs before you go and right before you visit a specific town. (Although I doubt this will be a problem in Pontelandolfo area.)
- Add at least 25% to Google drive times for rural driving.
