Getting out of Rome

After reading numerous replies about driving out of Rome, we have decided to take the scenic route to Assisi Rome. Does anyone have suggestions about which car rental location would be the best for easily getting out of the city, ie. least traffic and easiest route? We have driven over much of Italy, but have always avoided the bigger cities.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

You might consider taking the train well out of Rome and consider renting in Orvieto or Chiusi. You might even be able to find a site where you can return to the same office, avoiding a drop off charge.

Pick up your rental car near Tiburtina rail station. It's very near the A-1, and you're on your way to Assisi. From central Rome it's probably about a 20 euro taxi fare.
