I have been watching flights to Rome from Spokane for quite some time. Today on a whim I looked at flights to Naples and found that the flight to Naples was about $300 less for the day I was looking at, but the itinerary had a 2 hour layover in Rome. Is it OK to exit the flight in Rome and not get on the last leg? Would there be any penalty?
If it's a round trip ticket they can cancel the outward bound legs of the trip then you would be stuck in Italy without a way home. If you are flying out of Rome I don't know if there would be a penalty or not. I wouldn't chance it since buying a one way ticket to get home is going to cost a lot more than the three hundred you'll save by going into Naples. I would just continue on to Naples, call the hotel in Rome to let them know you will be doing a late check in, then visit Pompeii while in Naples. It will save you from making a day trip later if you had already planned that. Donna
In these days of increased security concerns the airline gets real nervous when someone is checked through and doesn't get on the plane. What did they leave behind? Without question the balance of your ticket will be canceled since your are a no-show. The airline has the right in the ticket contract to charge you for a one-way ticket to Rome. That probably would not happen because it is too much work for them. The only time you stand a chance of getting away with skipping a leg of your flight is when it is the last leg. You are stuck with going to Naples but just plan your trip from there.
You might exit the flight in Rome, but your checked bags are going to Naples.
Tom - the checked bags might not make it to Naples. When they don't board the flight, the bags might be pulled from the airplane while the other passengers sit and wait, then taken to a remote part of the tarmac and blown up in case they were loaded with explosives... In all seriousness Janelle, the airline will notice if you don't board and will not be happy.
I'd do the same thing that a previous poster mentioned; take the last leg of the flight to Naples, save $300, do a little sightseeing in Pompeii or Naples, and grab a train/bus back to Rome.
Stay overnight in Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento. I think it is unrealistic to fly overnight from Washington State to Naples - when I doubt you'll get much sleep, spend all day touring Pompeii and then make a 2 1/2-3 hour journey to Rome all in one day. You'll be so exhausted you won't care what you're seeing.
I agree w/ Sam in the previous post above. Pompei can be a day trip from Naples, but it would be too tiring to do after having just arrived. Stay overnight in Naples before going to Pompeii.
It really depends on the person as to how they handle jet lag. I don't crash until around 7 and my hubby can stay up until 10 or so. The OP should just judge how they feel when the plane lands and if they feel up to it they should visit Pompeii and continue on to Rome. The main point is not to get off in Rome or they will lose their luggage and their flight home. Donna
