My Fiance and I want to get married in Tuscany. Just the two of us in May 2009. What do we have to do to get the marriage license? How do you go about this? Thanks so much. Marie
Lots of requirements for a legal marriage in Italy. One of the steps is easier to do in the US at an Itlaian consulate than in Italy because of the possible back log in Italy. Try searching here on the forum as there have been a few threads.
You may want to get the help of a wedding planner that specializes in Itlaian weddings although folks have done it on their own.
Here are a couple of US state department links with info:
This is the link for the consular office in Florence which would cover Tuscany and it has the proper hours and places to go.

However, I think the Naples consular office does a bit better job of explaining the process.

Congratulations.
Plus if you decide that it seems to be a bit much, you can always have a civil ceremony in the US for the legal part and then exchange vows in Italy on your own.
Hi Marie: This question is asked about once a month here, search on the word married in search box upper right to browse these prior discussions. And here's a link to postings on the RS Graffiti Wall, this is a separate thing than the Search function I mention above. http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti125.htmlUnfortunately, the bottom line is that Italy's marriage laws don't make it easy for non-Italian or non-EU citizens to get married there. It can be done but I can't remember anyone, reporting here, doing it on their own, you need a wedding planner there, that won't be cheap and takes a substantial amount of time. Unlike here, it also helps if you're Catholic. If you are, start with your priest here. Now remember that I'm assuming you're asking about a legally valid marriage--if you're getting married here and just want some kind of "confirmation", it's not as difficult.
