We will be staying in Lucerne and then Wengen in late September of this year. Our next locale is the Dolomites. Probably Ortisei. I’m having trouble figuring out how to get from point A to point B. I’m certain we will want to split the trip into 2 days because it looks like it takes as many hours as an international flight. But where? And how? Advise please?? We will be using only public transport.
Take trains from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaaken to Zurich to Bellinzona. Switzerland to Milan to Verona to Bolzano.
From Bolzano take a bus to Ortisei.
You could overnight mid journey in Lugano on Lake Lugano between Belliinzona and Milan.
This routing takes 8-9 hours. Flying from Zurich to Venice or Bolzano might save a little time with the right scheduling.
www.Skyscanner.com has flight fares and schedules
www.TheTrainline.com has train schedules
Yes, it’s a long journey, with lots of mountains in between. You could travel via Domodosola down to Stresa, Milan or Verona and spend a night there. Then continue on the next day.
You can also go from Zurich to Innsbruck to Bolzano.
I use www.sbb.ch/en to view schedules, since they run the trains in Switzerland and have access to schedules for Austria and Italy.
Thank you all for the great advice. Much appreciated!
