Getting from Venice to Lugano May 2018

We will leave Venice for five days in Lugano. I've seen train, self-drive, and flight options on rometorio.com (great site). The flight option includes flying from Venice to Zurich, then taking the train to Lugano. Having not been to Switzerland before, is this train trip especially scenic/noteworthy enough to consider the extra travel time (vs. driving or taking the train to Milan/Lugano)?
Thanks.

While some parts may be scenic It is not worth extra travel time going to the airport and through security and flying to Zurich getting off the plane and then taking a train to Lugano.
Drive or take the train to Lugano from Venice.

Why go to all the trouble of flying, especially the PITA logistics of getting to Venice airport. Just get a Freccia train from Santa Lucia station right on the Grand Canal to Milano Centrale and change to an EC train to Lugano. Trains to Milan are at least every hour, and EC trains to Lugano are every 2 hours.

BTW, the train route from Zurich to Lugano uses a new 30 mile tunnel under the Alps. That cut the travel time by 45 minutes, and eliminated 30 minutes of spectacular Alpine scenery.
