We are staying in Varenna and need to get to Lugano. I know we could take a ferry to Menaggio and then the bus to Lugano, but I have read that the bus trip is curvy and I get carsick easily. Is it better to go to Como and take the train?

Train is very easy. Depart Varenna at 10:35, change at 11:26: at Monza ( before reaching Milano) for the train to Lugan, arriving 12:58. There is an earlier connection, departing Varenna at 9:05 but it takes longer.
The trains take you around the world to get there.
You can take the 15 minute ferry to Menaggio. There you take a bus #631 "Lugano Statione Nord" which is 45 minutes (3 stops.)
To get into the center of Lugano, you'd take city bus #12 for 12 minutes (5 stops.)
That's not too difficult.
