Getting from Sorrento to Tuscany

Hi,

We are wondering what is the best way to get from Sorrento to Tuscany in the evening. We'd like to depart Sorrento after 6pm and need a car in Tuscany.

Is the best route going to Naples, then taking a train to Florence, renting a car in florence and driving to Tuscany? Or is it recommended going directly to Tuscany from Naples.

Thanks!

You are under estimating the time it will take to travel between the two.
It will take around 5-6 1/2 hours. If you are planning a car, rent it in Sorrento.
Auto Europe or kemwel are good for rentals.

Look at rome2rio for trip planning.

Sometimes changing locations burns much of a day. You are not going to be happy campers if you try to circumvent it with what you have listed above. For starters, its unlikely you'll find car rental places open that late in Florence or the Tuscany region except perhaps at the Florence airport. Since it sounds like you are staying in the Tuscany region but not Florence itself, even if you could get a car your next problem is that by the time you get there around 11pm or later many hotels do not have a 24-hour front desk.

If I were in your shoes I'd head out in the morning and be settled in the Tuscany location by late afternoon. I would not drive from Sorrento, I'd take the train to Florence and get the car there, or maybe the fast train Naples to Rome and then a slower train to a station near my final destination with car rental and pick up the car there.

Where in Tuscany are you going? I would say take a train from Naples but you don't give a destination for a car pick up location. It will be very difficult to get a car so late in the evening upon your arrival in "Tuscany". More info please. Additionally, I would be reluctant to drive from Sorrento so late in the day. Generally Italian car rental companies don't view car troubles as we do in America. If you needed help say at 9pm the response time may be hours especially in the evening. Can you leave Sorrento earlier in the day?

Megan, first, just for the record, Florence is the principal city in Tuscany, so Florence and Tuscany are not different places. If possible, I think the best thing would be to dedicate that last day waking up in Sorrento to travel, and arrive at wherever you are headed in Tuscany by dinner time. Best bet I think would be to travel much earlier in the day, by train, from Sorrento to Naples to Florence, and then rent your car, and drive to your ultimate destination, assuring you will arrive while it is still light out. If you want to save some time and hassle, especially if you have much baggage, arrange for a taxi or car service to pick you up at your hotel door and deliver you to the Naples train station. That should take about an hour and cost about €100, not too bad for 2 people with bags, even better if you are more than 2 people. If you need to travel later in the day, check train schedules and still follow this plan, but spend the night in Florence and rent the car the next morning. By the way, what season are you traveling, and just where in Tuscany will you be staying?

Where are you staying exactly in Tuscany? Since you need a car there, I would definitely rent it in Sorrento and drive from the start. If you have luggage you will save yourselves a lot of hauling suitcases on and off trains. If there are two or more of you, it will also be cheaper than train fare. If you leave that late you won't make it by a decent hour. The drive is at least 5 hours (depending on where in Tuscany you go to). If you go by train you won't find any rental agencies open by the time you get to Florence.
