In doing some research on the forum- unless I've missed somthing this can be an ordeal and long journey if you do it on your own, other options I saw was hiring a car, and combinations of public transportation..
Just wondering if anyone has taken a tour, I have found one through Viator- a day trip for $48 which includes hotel pickup, as well as a tour of Salerno.
Does anyone have any suggestions or alternatives. It seems like an amazing destination. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Just looked up driving from Sorrento to Paestum which we will be doing in September-it looks like an easy drive from place to place.
I have used Golden Tours to visit Paestum from Sorrento and was satisfied with their service. There was plenty of time to enjoy the sites and the guide was good. One thing, you might want to take a picnic lunch with you to eat at the lunch break which was taken at the entrance to the Paestum site. Otherwise there are a couple of restos/cafes there.
Thanks for your advice. It seems Golden Tours and the Viator is the same. We will probably do that.
You could take the ferry, Sorrento-Amalfi-Salerno, ferry docks across from the train station, then train to Paestum.
If you decide to do this purchase R/T tickets. No services at Paestum.
We visited Paestum last April and loved it. The train station had a ticket counter and two working machines.
Forgot to say that they offered us a set price lunch at one of the restos at the site entrance. It was a bit basic but ok and not bad value for money ( something like 10/12 euro pp). Not everybody took it up and they did their own thing. Can't remember how much choice there was.
We did the Golden Tours tour, recommended, as I recall, by Linda. It suited perfectly. Check the price on their website. I believe we paid $40, but maybe that was euros.
After checking all the possibilities, that seemed the easiest, unless we were to stay overnight.
Thanks again for all that responded. Although we are still considering alternate ways of doing this, we will likely opt for a tour just for convenience and saving of time. Though we are normally "do it yourself" travelers, the convenience of a bus pick up at our hotel without multiple modes of transportation looks like the best option for us. Since this is going to be a day trip, we would have more time to actually see the sights at Paesrum rather than spending the extral time traveling there and back. With the tour, we would even get back to Sorrento at a reasonable time, allowing us to enjoy the evening. Either way, I will report back about the trip and how we got there.
Thanks for everyone that provided advice. We did this tour. As it turns out Viator and Golden tours are the same tour. We actually got a better price buying the ticket through Viator which is just a reseller. The trip is a full day, but it is amazing to see and a lot less crowded than Pompeii. If you have some extra time in your travels, this is a great trip, however it is only offered once a week. In addition to seeing the Greek and Roman ruins, there is also a museum which displays many of the artifacts. We never did make it to the Naples museum, but this was very informative.
Lastly, we considered doing this on our own, but the convenience of door to door service outweighed the longer time and logistics it would have taken to do it on our own.
I am currently researching this situation for July. Unfortunately the tour company only offers this on Tuesday, not one of our 4 full days in Sorrento. The tour looks great and I would definitely signed up for the ease of it if it was available on the correct day.
