Getting from Sorrento to Montelpulciano - Path of Least Resistance?

In September, we will need to get from Sorrento to Montelpulciano with our four-year old daughter. The two options I'm weighing: 1. Rent car in Sorrento and drive the whole way
2. Take train from Sorrento to Chuisi (or should it be another town?) and rent a car in Chuisi, then drive to Montelpulciano. I'm leaning toward train, but it's more because the driving makes me nervous. If it's really easier, we may do it. Thanks for any advice!

How are you going to survive in Montepulciano without a car? I would rent a car in Sorrento (several major rental companies there). From Sorrento to the freeway it is just a couple of miles on an easy 2 lane road. After that it's freeway almost all the way. How hard can it be?

Thanks for the feedback. Either way we'll have a car in Montelpulciano for sure! I was just wondering if it's better to pick up the rental in Sorrento vs. taking the train part way and then getting our car for our stay in Tuscany. "How hard could it be?" - Good POINT!

I agree with Roberto. Why spend money on two types of transport in one day? But - I will suggest that after you get on the A1 to stay there. I wasn't very comfortable at the rest areas just north of Napoli, nor one or two of the rest areas around the GRA, towards the north of Rome. North of Rome the rest areas were fine. Happy driving ...
