Getting from Sorrento to Milan for flight home from Milan airport (MXP)

Hi! My fiance and I are spending a couple of weeks in Italy for our honeymoon in October. Our last leg of the trip is in Sorrento. We fly home from Malpensa airport (MXP) at 10:30am on October 17. Any advice on the cheapest way to get from Sorrento to Milan on October 16? I figured we would need to travel from Sorrento to Naples, and then fly or take a train to Milan. I found cheap flights via a Kayak.com search (about 76 euro total for both of us) from Naples to Milan, but I am unfamiliar and weary of the hidden fees with the airline Air Italy. Their website is roughly translated, and it appears the only refundable ticket option is almost double the 76 euro price.

I also was wondering if we should stay in a hotel near the Malpensa airport, or if it would be worth staying closer to the Milan city center to take in the sights the night before the flight (our preferred option, but we want to be practical too).

Thanks!

The easiest and probably cheapest way would be the train. Roughly four hours to Milan and super economy fares are 40 euro/each. No hidden fees, no check-in. If you fly you have the additional cost and hassle of getting to the airport in Naples and from the airport in Milan. When you add in the addition travel times I am guessing the train beats the train by a couple of hours. With a 10.30 you easily spend the afternoon/evening in Milan and catch the train in the morning to the airport for an easy departure. For me it is a no-brainer -- take the train. Book the ticket now.

If you purchase rail tickets early, you can get one way tickets from Naples to Milan for €40. The trip takes a bit over 4 hours and there are many direct trains not requiring changes enroute. Very simple and if you get an early train, you’ll have some time to explore a bit of Milan.

If you fly, you’ll have to get to the airport in Naples, go through security and then get from the airport to downtown Milan. Most likely it would take the same time as going by rail where you’ll travel city center to city center with a lot less hassle.

I would agree that, all-in, the train makes more sense. That's what I would do.

That said, I wouldn't have any huge concerns about flying Air Italy. It's a new name for a smaller airline that's been around for a while - used to be "Meridiana", a regional airline that flew around (mostly) southern Italy/Sardinia. There's been an influx of new money from Qatar Airlines (Middle East), and they have just recently started flying from Milan to New York JFK (on a long-legged 737!). They have ambitious plans to expand, with dreams of becoming a major player in long haul international service to Italy. If they can make it, it would open up some new options for travelers so I'm hoping they are successful.

You'll have a great trip - congrats on the nuptials!

hey lauren
i agree with frank and phillip, take the train. take an early 10am ish train outta naples, get to milan centrale early afternoon, check in a hotel close by, enjoy rest of day and evening with walking around and dinner. you can set alarm or get a wake up call, check out and train to airport or if you prefer maybe a shuttle. i'm sure there's people on this forum to recommend a hotel.
we book with trainline.eu, with ease, you decide standard or premium at a fee, and enjoy your ride without stress and no airport woes.

Both railway companies run bullet trains from Salerno to Milano Centrale via Napoli Centrale. The official sites to look up prices and schedules are : trenitalia.com/tcom-en and italotreno.it/en. Trenitalia has already published the schedules up to December 9.

A single ticket on the direct Trenitalia train departing from Salerno at 9:14 AM on October 17 costs 52.9 E. No changes, no refunds.
The price will rise up to 104 Euro per person on the day of travel, you can't pay more.

Add 13 Euro per person and 52 minutes for the Airport train from Milano Centrale to Malpensa Aeroporto: www.malpensaexpress.it . No need to buy in advance, as there is free wifi on bullet trains, you can get those tickets just before arriving in Milan.

I Don't know if italotreno has already started selling tickets for October, but you can easily check by yourself. Italo is often cheaper than Trenitalia.

If you change your mind and want to fly, you can take an air-conditioned bus from.Sorrento to Naples airport. Get the bus across from the Sorrento train station.

I’m doing this exact same trip in a week. I took Roberto’s advice to just fly from Naples. I booked with Air Italy. I don’t recall what I paid but there are different priced options depending if you check a bag, seat selection, etc. I don’t remember it being expensive. Since we will have our luggage stored at the train station for the day, if something happens to happen to our flight then we’ll just take the train as a back up.
