I'm trying to find the most efficient (and economical) way to get from Siena to Volterra. Train? Bus? Help please!
We rented a car, but I understand there is a bus. The city of Volterra has info here and you can also use just Google "bus siena to volterra."
Most economical is the bus but not the most effcient. You'll have to change buses once or twice.
More effiecnet but a high cost is : rent a car for the day and explore other small towns on the way. Or look into a driver for the trip and see what the cost is.
I'ved used Paolo before, he is based out of Volterra. http://www.autonoleggiobaccitravel.com/
If you're planning with Rick's Italy book, see the bus schedule summarized on p. 670 (4x/day, 2 hrs, with connection in Colle Val d'Elsa), and bus stations/stops described at the start of each chapter. There are not buses on Sundays on this route (or many others). Se also the transport map on p. 674. Confirm schedules locally in Siena or at www.sienamobilita.it.
