Getting from Rome to Sorrento

Next week we're flying into Rome [FCO] early morning and going directly [as possible] to Sorrento. Obviously take the train from FCO to the central Termini station... but what to do from there?? What gives the best mix of fast / safe/ economical transport??

I've read there is a direct bus from Rome to Sorrento BUT it only runs once a day each way. Is this correct?? As for trains... is there any direct Rome- Sorrento line or will we have to change trains several times? Any tips greatly appreciated.

I had heard the train from naples to sorrento is crowded, hot, not scenic. We took train to naples then cab for a ride of about 1-2 miles to the main ferry dock in naples, from whence we took a ferry to Sorrento. I understand there are several ferry companies, but we took first at hand which turned out to be the largest and nicest. They don't run many trips. It left in the time frame of 1:30-2:30 in the afternoon. Trip to Sorrento took perhaps 25 minutes. www.metrodelmare.com lines MM2 and MM3 make the trip. Ticket sellers for that line are on ocean side of ticket selling windows in a separate kiosk.

Take a Trenitalia train from Termini to the Naples central train station. Take a Circumvesuviana train (private commuter rail service) from there to Sorrento. Trains depart from the lower level of the central station.

Hey! The Circumvesuvian line is really effective, but it is warm there is no AC. And my cousin and I definatly got on the wrong train last week and had to back track to get on the right one. Make sure your train is going to Sorrento and not Sarno oops. The train runs reguarlly, and is mostly on time. We took a Euro start from Rome to Naples, than the Circumvesuvian line to Sorrento. We were safe, but we did have some help from some people that realized before we did, that we were on the wrong train! And a very nice woman made sure we got off at the right train stop to turn around and platform to take. So just know you can go back and get to Sorrento if you take the wrong train.

Take the train from Rome to Naples. Taxi to the dock and ferry to Sorrento. The comuter train ride from Naples to Sorrento is long and there are pickpockets as you board the train. Have fun!

We did this trip last week (still in Sorrento right now!) Definitely take the train. Rome's Termini is busy and confusing but the ticket machines are easy to use. There is also a line where you can get a ticket from a real person. Lots of trains each day from Rome to Naples. Our biggest problem was finding the right train car to get on - many are numbered on paper which is ripped off.

We decided to take the ferry from Naples to Sorrento - port is a 10 minute taxi ride from the train station and costs 15 Euros. Ferries leave about every hour - be sure to tell the ticket agent you have luggage. Luggage has to have a ticket (Crazy!) and we almost missed out boat when we had to go back to the ticket area and take care of that detail.

Every thing Rick says about Sorrento is true - we're staying in a recommended hotel and have eaten at ALL his restaurants. Have overheard lots of folks complaining about terrible food - not us - smile!
