Getting from Rome to Orvieto and then Florence

What is the best inexpensive transportation from Rome to Orvieto and Orvieto to Florence?

That would be the train. The same train that stops in Orvieto would take you to Florence.

Look on Trenitalia.com to see the options for trains. The city names are in Italian, so Rome is Roma, Florence is Firenze. If you select Orvieto Centro, the ticket includes the 5-minute bus link into the city.

You can purchase tickets with the Trenitalia app.

I have been to Orvieto. It’s a nice hill town. Be sure to go inside the duomo to see the frescoes! I will be in Orvieto again for a week in September to attend an art class.

What are you planning to do there?

We will go into the duomo and see the frescoes and enjoy the town. It's one of the few hilltop towns we could find that you can get to without a car. So I'm really looking forward to it!

Orvieto a nice place to visit. But, I will just comment that you can reach many cities without a car. I have stayed in Montepulciano (& visited Pienza), Siena and Arezzo in that area and will be staying in Cortona when I go back this year. If you really want to see a different location, look at www.rome2rio.com. It usually will show you which train or bus company runs in that area.

In Orvieto, there is great ceramics shopping if you are into that. I love my ceramics from Italy and use them daily.

The church is the must see, but you might also visit St Patricks well ( you can walk down the donkey trail to the bottom and back up) And for sure, do the underground tour with all the dove cotes. There is a ticket office across from the church to buy tickets for a guided tour.

The views from the city walls are wonderful, perhaps buy a take away lunch and go enjoy that eating in the park with some locals.

The funicular from the train station is much more fun than the bus. The funicular is just across the street from the train...buy a round trip ticket.

PS. i LOVE Orvieto and have been several times...always deightful

Thanks, It does sound delightful. Do you think 1 day and 2 nights is enough?

I guess I should have asked 1st about hilltowns you could get to by train, but Orvieto sounds like a good choice. I did think about Sienna. I like the smallness of Orvieto, however.

Another thing to see in Orvieto is one of the underground caves. The hill the old town sits on is made of tufa rock, and it is filled with many caves. Most of these are private and used as wine cellars, but you can do a tour of a public one.

We did one night (two half days), and that was fine. Then we took the train to Florence from there.

We had one of our favourite meals in Italy in Orvieto, at Antico Bucchero. (I had the wild boar stew, and my husband had lamp chops with tiramisu for dessert.)
