Getting from Rome to Civitavecchia

We will be staying in Rome for a few days In October prior to a transatlantic cruise from Civitavecchia to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We don't yet have a hotel in Rome primarily because we'd like to know first how we should get from Rome to Civitavecchia on the day of the cruise. Any advice would be most appreciated. Hotel advice would also be appreciated. We're in our 60s and my wife has had 2 knee replacements, so too much hiking is not an option. Thanks so much.

The run to Civit... is basically a commuter run - 3,4 trains an hour, ranging from 45 mins to an hour 15 depending on train with tickets from about 5E to 12E. Once at the train station in Civit... it is about a ten min walk to the port entrance and a bus from there to your ship. Since walking is a problem there is a shuttle bus from the station to the port. It is a small bus and lines can be long since a lot of people will be doing the same thing. While there are taxis the run is really too short for them to be interested. However, a 10 Euro note might solve that problem. We have taken a number of cruises out of Civit... and always stay in the Termini area for the convenience to transit. We have used hotel Sonya, Aberdeen (furthest from Termini) and Contilla (closest). We prefer Sonya. Also, see RoninRome.com for even more detailed directions.

Staying near Termini is convenient for arriving by train from Fiumincino Airport, and departing to Civitavecchia, and for both metro lines within the city.

With bad knees you should try to stay in the city center near the Piazza Navona or pantheon. This will put you closer to more sites than staying near the termini. The termini is a good area but with mobility issues you'll want to be closer to the sites. For the day you need to get to the termini to catch the train to civitavecchia you can simply take a taxi. It should be less than 15 euros for the trip. You can use www.venere.com to find hotels that fit your budget.

Porters are nonexistent in Italian train stations. If luggage is an issue consider hiring a car to take you from your hotel to ship side. If it's too expensive on your own you should go on cruisecritic.com, find the board for your cruise and see if others want to share the cost. A couple of times we've used romecabs.com which has safe, English-speaking drivers, quality vehicles and is reliable.
