Getting from Rome Airport to City

Hi, wonder if I can get some advice on this topic from seasoned travelers to Rome ?

What have you found to be the best way to get to your hotel? Our hotel is located near the Spanish Steps. Would you recommend shuttle bus, Leonardo express, or private car service?

Looking forward to your thoughts, thanks very much.

and it depends on how much you want to pay.

For the last two years we have been using a private limo service, which has proven to be a very nice amenity. We are in our late 60's and do not want to use the Leonardo Express anymore.

We've used Roma Shuttle for door to door service and it was worth every penny. The Leonardo is cheaper, but you must walk a great distance at the airport and then walk about 400 meters inside Stazione Termini to reach the taxi stand out front. While you are walking you are also dragging your luggage.

Use a limo service or a taxi.

The Leonardo Express arrives now much closer to the taxis. That was an issue a couple of years back.
In any case the train isn't convenient unless your hotel is near the termini station and there are two or more of you. The regular taxi directly from the airport to the hotel is much more convenient and it is only €48 (flat fee). The train would be €15 pp but then you need to add another €15-20 for the taxi from the station to your hotel. So in the end the taxi is also cheaper.
A private driver (limo service) is another option but it generally costs a few euro more (55-60 euro) than the regular taxi.

I've used Romecabs.com on 2 separate visits and was very happy both times. The driver was waiting for us on both occasions even though we were delayed both times by 2-3 hrs. The first time because of engine trouble on our flight from London to Rome. The second time because we flew in on a Sunday and there weren't enough baggage handlers working that lead to looong wait times for luggage. I know, we should've carried on but we flew Easy Jet and had to check our carry on size suitcases on as we can only carry 1 bag on board. Both times I thought for sure we would be stranded but the drivers are very good at checking on why the flight was delayed as they have your flight info. Also, you pay the driver when you get to your destination so that relieves the worry about paying in advance and not having the driver show up at all!

Thanks very much for all the replies. After thinking it over, have decided to do the private car pickup. It sounds like the best option for us!

My wife and I, 73 and 72 and first timers, just did the private car to our B&B near the Palazzo Barberini - perfect choice. The driver waited an extra hour as Delta/Alitalia lost our bags - which might be delivered tonight, 60 hours late. The trip to the B&B was a great introduction to everything from the sights and scenery, to traffic, to scooters, to the winding streets of Roma. It's definitely an experience that qualifies as a "tour". It was the perfect choice for us.

The cost for service from Fiumacino Airport to Roma is 45€ on romashuttle.com. I just checked their website and this was the price posted. They meet you outside of the frosted doors after you clear customs holding a sign with your last name.

I'm glad to hear people using Leonardo do not need to walk so far as in the past to reach the main terminal and taxi stand outside. Roberto, good update.

The two companies I use are romecabs.com and romeshuttlelimousine.com. Both are very good. They both get very high praise on this and other travel forums.

Thanks again everyone! We tried to book with Rome Cabs but they were fully booked. Now awaiting word from Rome-Chauffeurs. Hopeful that we can get a private car service, have decided it would be the best option for us.

I have seen Rome Limo recommended here often. romelimo.com. But you know, a taxi would work very well for you.

I have used the Roma Shuttle Service on two occasions, and they were fantastic on both occasions, two and from the airport. Always waiting for me when I got to the airport, and then when I was ready to go back to the airport. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I contacted them, Alfredo Costabile is the general manager, and had great contact with him (http://www.romashuttle.com/). Very dependable service. I have also found another service (haven't used them yet) but here is the website, (http://www.romeshuttlelimousine.com/). Hope this helps, and I am usually a solo, senior traveler, but this means of transfer is well worth it for less stress, and relaxing after a long trip in the air.

We used Rome Chauffeur also in May and were very happy with the service. It was one less worry having someone waiting for us at the airport and driving us directly to the door to our apartment in Rome. Enjoy your trip!
