I'm leaving for Rome in a few weeks and I have three options for getting from the airport to Casa San Giuseppe in the Trastevere area. RS directions are (1) Leonardo Express to Termini train station; "H" bus to Sonnino stop; walk rest of way, or(2)taxi from FCO to Piazza Trilussa - €40; walk from Piazza Trilussa. The hotel says to take train line FR1 and get off at Trastevere Station; then, tram 8 for six stops, getting off near Piazza Trilussa; walk rest of way. I'm game to take any of these options, but I keep reading that the taxi drivers from the airport insist on €60 fare. Others say that the Leonardo Express/bus option was a nightmare. And, no one mentions the option the hotel suggests. Clearly, I'm obsessing at this point, but I'd appreciate suggestions from anyone who's made this trip. Thanks!
I have stayed a couple times at Hotel Trastevere, in the Trastevere, that is somewhat close to your hotel. We took the FR1 route and found it probably easier (and cheaper) than the other options.
At the Airort station, get your ticket for the FR1 from the machine or window, it is about 5.50 Euro to Trastevere Station, buy a 1 euro metro ticket from the tobacco stand as well for the tram. The FR1 is about the only other train at the airport besides the Leonardo Express. Trastevere Station is about 4 or 5 stops along the line.
When you get off at the station head out the front door to the main road, keeping to the left, you will see the tram stop, hop on and you will be near your hotel shortly. Basically, if you cross the river, you went too far.
Make sure you validate your train and metro ticket.
I think this route is more direct and you do not deal with the hectic mess at Termini, plus it gets you there for a fraction (6.50 euro) than the other options.
Have your hotel arrange a ride for you from the airport. It's a 40 Euro flat fee (plus tip). You pay the driver cash upon arrival at your destination. The driver will be waiting for you outside the baggage claim holding a sign with your name on it. I do this all the time and it's very, very convenient. I wouldn't do all this other, train, tram, taxi business. It's far too complicated. Usually, a hotel will have a service that they use regularly so there won't be any problem with the driver getting lost.
Nancy, while we usually opt for the cheapest method, you are going to be "dog tired" because of your long trip from Oregon. Hire a driver from Romecabs.com. Send Stefano an Email and ask him about the price, or any other question that you have, and you will get a prompt answer. Stefano will have a driver meet you at the airport, and he will wisk you safely and happilyy to your destination. It's worth every penny.
I would also suggest Romecabs. We used them when we were ther a few weeks ago and the driver was waiting for us with a sign with our name. Worth every €.
Nancy, I HAVE made that trip and my suggestion would be the Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini, and then Taxi to Piazza Trilussa. If you use a metered Cab, the fare should be about €40 (as I recall, that's about what I paid). The Hotel is a bit "hidden" so the Taxi Driver may not be able to find it easily. It's only a short walk from Piazza Trilussa to Casa San Guiseppe, so not a big deal. I'd suggest photocopying and enlarging the Map from the Guidebook, so that you'll be able to "orient yourself" when you arrive at the Piazza. You'll probably arrive on the far side of the Piazza from the Hotel. Looking at the Piazza with the river to your right, walk right through the Piazza to the end of the street. Turn left about 50 feet and the Hotel entrance will be on your right (look for a CCTV Camera mounted on the wall and facing the entrance). I could provide some photo links, but I don't wan't to ruin any surprises on the tour. I assume you're taking the South Italy tour? Do you know yet who your Guide is? Cheers!
Many thanks to all of you for your help! I never fail to be amazed by the wealth of experience on this helpline. Frank, we are going on the Southern Italy tour and our guide is Tommaso Pante. After the tour, we're spending eight days in Sorrento/Capri/Salema, and then we're heading down to Taormina to do the RS Sicily tour (guide is Alfio DiMauro). We've gone on nine RS tours so far and, combined with independent travel, they work well for us.
Nancy, I don't think Frank replied on this Thread? It sounds like we both use the same travel method - a RS tour combined with some self-guided travel. I've been on four RS tours so far and already planning for the next one. Thanks for the information on the Guides. Cheers!
Sorry, Ken, I obviously wasn't thinking too clearly! Blame it on travel-planning fatigue perhaps.
