Getting from Pompeii to Atrani/Amafli

OK...so...will be flying into Naples from London early Sept, arriving late and staying near the train station. The next day, we will proceed to Atrani (right near Amalfi). We thought maybe it would be best to do Pompeii before heading to Atrani, as when we are coming back thru to go to Rome 3 days later, we plan to do the Arch. Museum, and don't want to spend all day doing both and end up arriving in Rome really late. For the record, this will be on Fri, Sept 5 (heading for Atrani).

So my confused questions...should we go back to the main train station in Naples after doing Pompeii (we would leave our bags at the train stn if doing this) to catch a train to Salerno and then onward to Atrani? Or...should we take a train from Pompeii to Sorrento and go from there? What would be less of a hassle?

For the record - I am considering a private car hire, but was thinking to take the train as far as either Sorrento or Salerno and go from there. (Or perhaps arrange for someone to pick us up at Pompeii). There are 3 of us, so I am trying to weigh time wasted on trains/bus vs money spent on a car hire - anything over about 100 euro is too high for me for a car hire. (60-80 is my comfort zone).

You don't need to backtrack to Napoli, nor do you need to catch a train to Sorrento.

You can take a local train from Pompeii to Vietri sul Mare, and then take a taxi/transfer from there (no need to go all the way to Salerno either).

You can also arrange a direct car transfer from Pompeii to Atrani, and ask for a route through the mountain ridge (thus approaching from Ravello).

I don't want to sound preposterous, but a good look at Google Maps will help you locate better all these points (Pompeii, Napoli, Atrani, Vietri sul Mare, Sorrento).

Yeah - I was being kinda dumb - I found a website when I googled going from Naples to Amalfi - and under getting to the Amalfi coast from Naples - it says to get to Salerno (and I didn't realize it meant go to Salerno if that was where you are staying, not as a via point to Amalfi...I should have scrolled further...it does say Vietri Sul Mare). I really should take up coffee drinking...sigh.

That being said, does anyone have any recommendations for a moderately priced transfer service?
