Getting from Palermo to place where mummies are hanging on walls

Saw an old Rick Steve's DVDon Italy where one section was on Sicily. He went to a place overseen by a monk where there were open crypts and 100s of mummies hung along the wal in categories like children, women, professionals, etc. it was somewhere outside Palarmo. Anyone been there and know how you get there? Do you need a car? Will get a car to drive to Taormina, but would like to use bus or train in Palarmo and to Cefula if possible.

Connie, I don't know where the mummies are, but I'm sure you'll get replies on that. I think there is a Capuchin monastery in or near Palermo that has mummies or skeletons with decorated skulls, but that would probably not include the remains of women and children. You can also take a train to Taormina if you like (the train station is in Giardini-Naxos at the foot of the mountain) and then take a bus or taxi into the city. Parking a car is relatively easy if you decide to use one, your hotel may be able to give you discounts for the public garages (conveniently located). Do not park in restricted areas (these are clearly marked), which are reserved for residents. I've used buses in Palermo and it's worked out well, although some routes can be crowded during rush hours. From Palermo, Cefalu is a relatively short train ride away. You could do it as a daytrip, but I find it very relaxing to stay in Cefalu (good beaches, interesting sites). The cathedral's mosaic is stunning.

Palermo at Catacombe dei Cappuccini. I was there quite a while ago, at the time there was a bus that went from Palermo to the Catacombs. Check a guidebook for Sicily, should be listed.
