On our trip this fall, we'll need to get from Palermo to Ortigia in one day. Is there a car service (with a driver) anyone has used for a drive like that? Or is it better to just rent a car and drive ourselves?

There are very comfy long distance air conditioned buses.
We did this trip both ways in April with InterBus.
Less than E20 pp, it takes 3 and a half hours, with a stop halfway at Highway Services for bathrooms, coffee, etc.
Buses leave and arrive from behind the Centrale rail stations at each end.
Very careful drivers!
Very easy, we booked online from here at home in advance.
I highly recommend it.
