Getting from Milan (Airport) to Varenna

My wife and I will be traveling in 2012 to Milan and hope to spend several nights at Lake Como (Varenna). Can you take a train from Milan's airport direct to Varenna or do you have to take the train or a cab into the city to the main station? If so, how much time should we allow to get from the airport to the hotel in Varenna? Are there options other than the train? Thanks very much, Dave

The main route on Trenitalia is via Milan Centrale. The journey will take 2.1hrs-2.5hrs depending on the run. However, I believe that there is a Trenord train that goes from Malpensa to Como. It's a 1hr11min train journey with a train change at Saronno. From there, you would have to catch the ferry to Varenno-Esino. Overall, you won't save any time.
