Getting from Livorno to Cinque Terre

Hi Guys,

On Sunday May 22nd, my husband and I arrive at the Port of Livorno at 7am via the Moby Cruise Ship coming from Sardinia.

We need to get from Livorno to Cinque Terre and are considering the train. Do we need to book tickets in advance, or are seats always available?

We read online that the boats can sometimes dock anywhere from 1hr to 1.5hrs late so I'm concerned about buying a ticket in advance. I also don't want to sit around twiddling my thumbs waiting for a train several hours out because I decided to be cautions and book a 10am train (for example).

No need to buy anything in advance. Make your way to the station by taxi (or bus no. 1 from Piazza Grande) and buy your tickets at the station. No chance of seats being sold out. Besides you are likely to use a regionale train anyway.

A few additional points to mention. Be sure to validate (time & date stamp) your Regionale tickets prior to boarding the train, or you'll risk hefty fines. You'll have to specify which of the five towns you're going to from Livorno, as the Cinque Terre is not a destination as such.

Depending on what time you arrive at Livorno Centrale, you may be using a combination of Regionale, Intercity and Freccia trains. The latter two have compulsory seat reservations which will be provided with the tickets you purchase. Tickets for IC and Freccia trains do not have to be validated. The trip will be about 1.5-2.5 hours each way, often with one or two train changes. There are a few direct trains although not likely you'll be able to connect with one of those.

Be sure to check the schedules on the Trenitalia website for trains returning to Livorno so that you're not late getting back to the ship.
