Getting from Ischia to Pompeii, best place to stay and how best to get there

I will be in Ischia for 4 nights and on the last day I would like to go to Pompeii or go somewhere to spend the night and go to Pompeii the next day?

How do I get there? Do I take the boat to Naples? And train from there? Or is there a way to go somewhere else smaller, nicer that is close to Pompeii? I heard in Pompeii is very touristy.

How long does it take?

If I go straight to Pompeii, is there a place to store my luggage? At the train station?

Thanks,
Francine

FL,

It would help to have a bit more information about your overall Itinerary. Where are you going after the Pompeii visit?

You might consider taking the Ferry from Ischia to Sorrento and spending at least one night there, as that's a convenient location for getting to Pompeii. AFAIK, there is at least one Ferry company operating on that route - https://ca.directferries.com/alilauro.htm . That will be far easier than taking the Ferry to Naples, taxi to the train station and then train to Sorrento.

Choose a hotel in the main part of Sorrento, and then just walk to the Circumvesuviana station and take the short ride to Pompeii. You might consider hiring one of the local guides for your Pompeii visit, as you'll learn more and it will be a much more interesting experience. It would also be a good idea to have a look at the RS Italy guidebook, as there's lots of information there on touring in that area.

An alternative idea would be to take the ferry to Naples and spend at least one night there. Take the Circumvesuviana from there to Pompeii. Be sure you're wearing a money belt as you may encounter pickpockets.

I will be going to Rome after
Pompeii. Thanks for the info. Sounds like sorrento may be more enjoyable over Naples??

Francine,

Sorrento would be a great place to spend a few days. Two nights would be ideal there, as that will allow one full day of sightseeing.

To get from Sorrento to Naples to connect with your train to Rome, you can use the Circumvesuviana, the Campania Express (a better choice) or a private transfer. If you're on a budget, one of the trains will be fine.

Thanks!

Do you think it is better to stay in Sorrento rather than Naples?

Here is my itinerary:
Milan 3 nights
Treviso 4 nights
Ischia 4 nights

Then, I have 5 nights until my flight from Rome.

Suggestions?
