Coming from Innsbruck by train, what's the best way to get to Kastelruth? There doesn't seem to be a way to get there using only the train.
Kastelruth (Castelrotto) is 1000mt above sea level, and trains don’t like steep grades too much. There is no train service there. You will need to alight the train in Bolzano, down in the valley, and take the bus up to your final destination.
I thought that might be the case. Thank you for the info.
If you take the train to Ponte Gardena Waidbruck you could take a taxi to Kastelruth. It’s a bit pricey but doable.
Google says the driving distance between Ponte Gardena Laion/Waidbruck Lajen station is 6 km. That doesn't seem too far. Not sure how much a 6 km cab ride would cost in that part of Italy, but it sounds like a good option. Thank you.
Actually, on rome2rio.com it says that 9 minute cab ride should cost between $35-45 USD. It also mentions the Line 170 bus can also get you there, but doesn't say how much it costs.
This website will show the bus schedules and prices. In fact, you can start with Innsbruck Hbf and Kastelruth (or Castelrotto) and it will show the whole itinerary with trains and bus and costs.
