I've learned I can take a train, or bus.
I'm ok with either, but do I need to buy tickets in advance? (How far?)
If I take the train the site is saying I'll have to get onto a separate bus to get to the airport,is this right?
Suggestions?
I would take the bus, then you don't have to transfer. It is direct. You can book on-line if you want (€20) or buy on board the bus (cash only, €25). There might be someplace you can buy the ticket in Florence near where the bus picks up.

Otherwise, train to Bologna and then bus from the train station to the airport, if the direct bus timetable doesn't work for you.
(train: €14.90, to get this fare, you would have to buy in advance, €25 is the walk up fare and the bus is €6)
The fares on Italotreno.it are the same 1, 30 or 85 days out at €17,50 for the economy ticket - Trenitalia has economy tickets 2+ months out for €13 sop no huge savings other than I do not know if economy rates sell out.
Then yes - a bus from Bologne Centrale

Thank you! ! I was really confused and worried about not knowing what to do!
