what is the easiest way to go? Are their local trains that run between the two? We will be getting in from Cinque Terra to Firenze, but our hostel is near SMN. Any suggestions?

Kristin....there are commuter trains every 10 or 15 minutes or so between Rifredi to SMN...more frequent during rush hours, of course. You can purchase what essentially is a Florence local transit ticket from the newsagent....the cost 2 years ago was one Euro each. Validate the ticket and hop on the first train heading to SMN...trip takes about 5 minutes.
