Getting from Airport to Trevi Fountain

Hello All,
I am debating whether we should hire a car to take us from the airport or just ride mass transit. We will have our 18 month old with us in a stroller, then I will have one backpack of luggage and my husband will have a smaller rolling bag with a car seat attached (hence the need for rolling luggage). Do you all think this is manageable? we typically travel in two Rick Steves backpacks, but with the car seat, we are thinking rolling luggage makes more sense.

How crowded do you think the metro will be? we arrive around 7:30 in the AM.
I would prefer to spend money on fun stuff rather than a private car, but I am willing to if necessary!

.???

You can take an official taxi to anywhere within the city walls for 48€. With a child I would do that, rather than mess with transfers and the metro.

With three people, any method other than a taxi from the airport will not save that much money, in addition to adding a LOT of hassle.
So, just take the fixed price taxi.

Yes, the roads will be crowded, but so will everything else - you'll be hitting rush hour. Since the taxi rate from the airport is fixed, you won't pay more if you get stuck in traffic.

Once you've gotten to your hotel or apartment and stowed your luggage, you can decide about walking vs buses and metro vs taxis to get around. But to and from the airport, with all your stuff, and particularly on arrival when you are jetlagged, anything but a taxi is a false economy (and as I said, not even that economical for 3).

If you want to save money, take the regionale train to Tiburtina station. The fare is €8 per person. Children under 3 are free. Then you could take a cab (€12) to your lodgings. The only train to Termini is the Leonardo Express at €14 per person and you'll still need a cab (€8)Since both trains start at the airport, they are empty so they shouldn't be crowded and no problem stowing your luggage. The trip to Tiburtina takes 48 minutes, to Termini 32. If you want to check the schedules go to the web site mentioned above and enter Fiumincino Aeroporto to Roma Tutti Le Stazione.

It's a long walk from the terminal to the trains and then you'll still have to exit the stations and find a taxi. After an international flight with a child and luggage, treat yourself to a cab from the airport. Don't look just at the price of the ride. Weigh it against the total you'll spend for the trip. The amount of savings is minimal compared to the inconvenience and maintaining your sanity. Don't forget to throw coins into the fountain!

There are no fixed rates between Roma Tiburtina or Termini and the city. Taxi from Tiburtina to the Colosseum was about €15 last July. From Termini it was slightly less. Taxi stands are right outside the entrance at either station. So a taxi for two adults from FCO to your hotel would cost less than tickets for the Leonardo Express plus a taxi to your hotel.

Take the taxi from FCO.

It might cost 10 or 12 Euros more, but a private car might be something to consider. After a long flight, some jet lag, not being familiar with the area, and an 18 month old who may be a bit cranky, there is nothing better than having your private driver meet you inside the terminal and whisk you to your hotel. No waiting in the regular taxi line, or just having a "lost" feeling. It is not the cheapest way, but it is definitely the best. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service (not a cab company) but only cost about 10 or 12 Euros more than a regular taxi. We always use them and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We usually send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance.

TAKE A TAXI FROM THE AIRPORT FOR $48 FLAT FARE.

ANY OTHER OPTION WOULD BE INCONVENIENT, TIME CONSUMING, AND LIKELY MORE EXPENSIVE FOR 3 PEOPLE ONCE YOU ADD THE PRICE OF 3 TRAIN TICKETS PLUS THE TAXI FARE FROM THE STATION TO YOUR FINAL DESTINATION.

Ok, we have booked a car!! the thought of a temperamental 18 month old, jet lag and attempting to navigate the train has me thinking I was crazy to even consider it!
