Anyone have an idea of how much Euro I can withdraw at one time at an ATM without jamming the machine? I'd like to take out a good chunk at any given time to keep fees low (I do have a fairly high withdrawal limit). Thanks!
The amount of cash you can withdraw per 24 hours is set by the bank that issued your card.
The number of bills you can withdraw at any one time is determined by the machine. As an example, Bank of America ATM's in the US have a limit of 40 bills.
So if you want to withdraw a "good chunk," choose the highest bill denomination that's available.
The upper limit on each machine is usually 250 euros. Even if you select "other amount " and type in more the machine will probably reject your request. You can make more that one transaction at a machine if you want more cash.
the other two posters are right. The most i was able to withdraw was 250 euros and for me that was good for a few days unless i had to pay for a hotel. make sure you let your bank know that you are going to be in Italy so they don't put a hold on yhour acct. thinking your number is being used or card was stolen.
Scot,
Just like home each machine has a transaction limit, the amount you can withdraw at one time. I have found that about half the time I can get 500 euro at one time. I have always gotten 500 euro from Postamats, the post office bancomats.
I have never seen a bancomat in Italy that lets you choose which bills you get.
Since transaction limits are normally set to prevent the machine from running out try to look for machines away from high traffic areas.
These replies are all good. What you are able to withdraw from an ATM in Italy has nothing to do with your limit at home (unless you exceed that). Most ATMs limit withdrawals to preserve cash. You really can't tell what the limits are, though. I think the best places are ATMs physically connected to banks.
